Kelsey Mummert

Kelsey is especially passionate about photographing the interaction of humans and nature. As an ecologist obsessed with connections, she aims to photograph conservation stories that show what's possible with some care and elbow grease. Her main interests rest in documenting local, on-the-ground efforts to protect and restore at-risk species and habitats.

Conservation isn't an abstract concept; it's an experience of  taking action. And it's action you can take in your own community.

Conservation looks like picking up a chainsaw (and PPE!) and a bottle of herbicide to clear an understory dominated by bush honeysuckle. It's gathering around a blacklight and white sheet at midnight to learn about moths. It's sharing the natural world with others so they can make a tangible differences.

How I view conservation

My roots are in conservation. I'm formally educated with a B.S. of Biology and have a few extra certifications to boot (wildland fire and commercial pesticide applicator, to start). But I'm excited to blend my creativity with my passion for stewardship. There's little I love more than crouching in tallgrass prairie or jumping over the bones of Ailanthus to photograph people caring for the land.

Not just slinging a camera
